The Eco 411
Recyclable, compostable and reusable three types of eco-packaging that you would have heard before, but what do they mean? We've broken down the terminology to help you breakdown the packaging.
What it means
Compostable packaging is packaging made from a renewable plant-based material or biopolymer that will fully break down into natural compounds under the right conditions. To be certified compostable, the packaging needs to completely break down in 90 days in a commercial composting facility and 180 days in a home compost.
Why it's great?
One of compostable packaging's greatest benefits is once the goods are broken down, they leave behind nothing but nutrients that can be put back into the environment. Composting also isn't limited to 'compostable packaging', cardboard and paper are great additions to your backyard compost heap as it helps with the carbon-nitrogen ratio.
How to dispose of it
Compostable packaging can be seen as one of the more complex packaging solutions to dispose of due to the limited knowledge and resources available, but it's a lot simpler than you may think.
Firstly, ensure all adhesives, labels and stickers are removed from the compostable packaging, unless they are also certified compostable. Then place it in an organics bin to go to an industrial composting facility or in your home compost and let the magic happen. It's that simple! Find out more information on how to dispose of compostable packaging.
Cut your compostable packaging up into smaller pieces to make it easier to break down.

What it means
Recyclable packaging is one of the most well-known eco-friendly packaging solutions available. In its most basic form, recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials or objects. Over the years, waste providers have found ways to broaden the scope of what is recyclable and implemented new channels to accommodate.
Why it's great?
The best benefit of recyclable packaging is that it's easy for consumers to understand and access with every Aussie household having a recycling bin. Australia has great recycling resources available supported by local councils, so you are more reassured the packaging will be properly disposed of once it's reached the end-user.
How to dispose of it
The majority of recyclable packaging can be disposed of in a general recycling bin. However, some recyclable packaging products may not be as obviously recyclable or may require specific recycling channels, e.g. Redcycle or TerraCycle.
When choosing a recyclable packaging product, the best way to ensure success is to educate your customers on how to dispose of it or provide them with the right channels to close the loop on your packaging.
Add a card in your orders that explains how to dispose of your packaging responsibly.

Reusable packaging is seeing a resurgence, not only in consumer packaging but also secondary and tertiary packaging. Simply put, it's packaging that can be used multiple times and is one of the most sustainable ways to reduce our environmental impact. It can also include repurposing or reusing packaging you've received.
Why it's great?
There's an obvious environmental benefit that comes with reusable packaging, as there's no immediate disposal process required. However, it also provides financial benefits, saving in both long-term packaging and disposal costs. Due to its durability, reusable packaging can also provide better product protection and reduce damages.
How to dispose of it
One of the best things about reusable packaging is that you don't need to dispose of it, however, there is still a loop to consider. For packaging that's designed to be reusable, you need to think about how to return it to the original user and the costs associated with this. Ensure your business structure, volumes, delivery schedule and delivery distance can justify the investment. For packaging you've received that's not designed to be reusable, consider ways you could repurpose it, e.g. reusing shipping cartons or repurposing Geami into gift wrap.
Consider your returns process and how you can sustainably get the packaging products back to you.

As a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) we are committed to reduce our impact on the environment and provide environmentally friendly solution to our customers wherever possible.
We are developing environmentally friendly solutions, including recycling and reusing during the manufacturing process, and undertaking Lean initiatives to reduce waste. While we do this as a business we are sharing this to our customers to offer environmentally friendly product and solutions to help our customers work toward the 2025 National Packaging Targets.
Composting is the natural, biological decomposition of organic matter by fungi, bacteria, insects, worms and other organisms to product a nutrient rich compost. A commercial compost facility optimizes the process to ensure rapid biodegrading of organic materials. These sites optimize each step by controlling conditions like shredding materials to the same size or controlling the temperature and oxygen levels.
These measures ensure a rapid biodegrading of the organic material to a high quality, toxic-free compost. Home composting uses the same variables but are less controlled. There are three main ways of home composting:
- Time, which is the slowest method as you don't have any help in increasing oxygen levels which increase heat and create the perfect environment for composting.
- Motion, by turning the mixture, you add oxygen to the compost, accelerating the process. Adding heat creates a perfect environment for microorganisms to emerge and breakdown materials.
- Worms, the fasted at-home method, which put worms to work to aerating your compost and degrade the material faster.
Biodegradable packaging can break down when exposed to certain light, air and moisture conditions. Some products include our Kraft Water Activated Tape, Geami, FillPak and our rubber bands.
We also carry a range of sustainable packaging that include pallet wrap made from recycled materials, compostable BioFill, Mailers that are recyclable and made from recycled materials. Plus we are ever growing this range, so keep an eye out for any new products.
Paper Ð Try to cut paper products into smaller pieces allowing it to breakdown easier
Compostable Plastic Ð Requires a higher temperature and will take 12-18 months to break down. Please note this is a general rule and might be faster or take longer for certain products.
- Load containment
The Velcro Logistrap - A reusable strap that is used to secures pallet loads for movement around worksites, which also cuts down the amount of time it takes to wrap a pallet.
- Reusable mailing bags
Our return mails allow your customer to return or reuse the mailer more than once, with multiple adhesive strips.
- Eco-friendly bubble wrap
A great bubble wrap alternative is Geami. A die cut paper that creates a 3D honeycomb structure that protects your products. Made from a 100% recyclable, renewable and biodegradable paper.
- Protective packaging
Another eco-friendly alternative to Geami is BioFill, a compostable product that provides shock absorbing protection for product in transit. Made from natural corn starch that once applied with water, breaks down quickly. Or if you are looking for just a mailer we carry Jiffy Padded mailers that is a cushioned mailer constructed from heavy-duty kraft.
We carry a range of compostable plates, cups and cutlery, to replace those single use plastic cutlery, plates and Styrofoam cups.
