Strapping Safety
Strapping, whether used on pallets, smaller bundles or heavy loads, is used frequently throughout the manufacturing, logistics and construction industries as an effective consolidation tool. Following safe strapping procedures should be the number one priority to ensure a safe workplace and supply chain. Below are a few of our tips for using strapping safely.
Wear proper protection
Gloves, safety glasses, protective footwear, long sleeved shirts and pants are a few examples of the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) needed when using strapping. Keep in mind that the type of strapping you use will impact the robustness of your PPE.
Main strapping hazards include recoiling straps, sharp edges and tripping. Wearing PPE with the appropriate safety standards is vital to protect against cuts, abrasions or more severe injuries. PPE should also be used when cutting and removing strapping from bundles or pallets. Signet has a wide range of Personal Protective Equipment available to help you stay safe in your strapping operations.
Use a strapping machine or accessories to create an ergonomic workplace
Rolls of strapping are notoriously heavy, especially steel strapping. To reduce the risk of workplace injury, always use appropriate mechanical or automatic strapping equipment. A mobile Strapping Dispenser is a safer way to carry strapping around the warehouse for ease-of-use if the coil is too heavy to lift or move manually. More businesses today are moving toward automatic methods to not only ensure the safety of their workers but increase morale, operational efficiency and output.
Cut it right
They say knowledge is power, and when it comes to strapping, it can prevent potentially life-threatening workplace accidents. Before undertaking any strapping activities, always read the instructions and follow safety procedures. Different strapping materials require different tools. Always use the matching strapping, accessories and tools to enable easier application and reduce the risk of injury. A good tip is to cut the strapping straight, in a way that won’t create sharp or pointed ends.

Never move a load by lifting or pulling the strap
Strapping is designed to secure loads throughout the supply chain effectively. Attempting to lift or pull a load by the strap could result in minor to serious injuries if the strap was to break and ‘snap back’. If the load is too heavy to lift by hand, use aids/accessories and equipment designed for the task.
