At Signet, we were proud to contribute to the National Circular Textiles Pilot, led by Australia Post, collaborating with iQRenew and RollsPack to develop a 100% post-consumer recycled mailing satchel. The Smart Circular Satchel enabled R.M. Williams customers to return unwanted clothing through existing postal networks. This satchel was locally recycled at the end of its lifecycle when correctly disposed of through the pilot—helping to close the loop.
Case Study Overview
Pilot Led By: Australia Post
Pilot Partners: R.M. Williams, BlockTexx, Remondis, iQRenew
Packaging Collaborators: Signet, RollsPack
Industry: Packaging | Postal | Circular Economy
Solution: Smart Circular Satchel made from 100% Australian post‑consumer recycled household soft plastics

The Challenge
Australia sends more than 220,000 tonnes of textiles to landfill every year, highlighting the urgent need for accessible, scalable solutions that keep resources in circulation. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Australia Post sought a way to enable customers to return unwanted clothing through existing postal channels — without the packaging itself becoming waste.
The challenge was twofold:
- create a simple, customer‑friendly return solution for textiles, and
- ensure the satchel used could support genuine circular outcomes within Australia
The Initiative: National Circular Textiles Pilot
Led by Australia Post, the National Circular Textiles Pilot was developed to help R.M. Williams customers return unwanted clothing through the postal system, making participation in textile recovery easy and convenient. Signet was proud to collaborate with iQRenew and RollsPack on the development of the satchel that supported the pilot. This project was supported by the Seamless Circular Clothing Textiles Fund.

The Innovation: Smart Circular Satchel
The Smart Circular Satchel produced for the Australia Post pilot was made from 100% Australian post‑consumer recycled household soft plastics. This project represents a significant milestone for the Australian packaging industry and provided a strong example of locally made circular packaging solutions. Unlike conventional satchels, this mailer bag:
- is made entirely from locally recovered household soft plastics
- is manufactured onshore using Australian processing and manufacturing capability
- is designed for a closed-loop system, allowing the satchel to be recycled again within the pilot when disposed of correctly
How the Closed Loop Works
The Smart Circular Satchel was designed with circularity embedded at every stage:
- Collection: Post‑consumer household soft plastics were collected through established Australian recovery programs, including the Woolworths return‑to‑store program and council collection systems.
- Reprocessing: Signet’s trusted partner, iQRenew, processed these recovered soft plastics into high‑quality recycled LDPE resin pellets.
- Manufacturing: At Signet’s local manufacturing facility, these recycled resin pellets were converted into blown film.
- Conversion: RollsPack then transformed the film into finished Smart Circular Satchels.
- Return & Recycling: Once the satchels were used by R.M. Williams customers, and returned through the pilot program, they were recycled once again through iQRenew and remade into resin pellets.
- Closing the Loop: The resin pellets from iQRenew can be used once again in Signet's manufacturing process, to further support circular outcomes.

Why This Matters
Through the completion of this pilot it was evident that 100% locally recovered household soft plastics can be transformed into high‑performance packaging and continuously circulated through recycling methods when the correct disposal instructions are upheld.
This initiative delivers strong benefits by reducing landfill, supporting Australian jobs through local processing and manufacturing, and providing a scalable example of how circular economy principles can be practically applied across the value chain.
Signet’s Role & Outlook
Manufacturing has been at the heart of Signet since 1968. For over five decades, Signet has proudly supported more than 60,000 Australian businesses with quality, onshore‑manufactured solutions built for performance, reliability, and sustainability.
Here at Signet, we are incredibly proud to have collaborated with iQRenew and RollsPack on the development of the satchel that supported the pilot. By working together across the value chain, we’re demonstrating that circular packaging solutions are not only possible — they’re practical and scalable options in the future.
PIDA Finalist
Australia Post’s Smart Circular Satchel has been named a finalist in the 2026 Australasian Packaging Innovation and Design Awards across three categories: Outside of the Box, Sustainable Packaging, and Domestic & Household.
This milestone pilot was a powerful step toward a greener packaging future, and we’re proud to play a part in building better outcomes for Australian businesses, communities, and the environment.
